RoHS (Restriction of use of certain Hazardous Substances) is an EU directive who limits the use of 6 dangerous materials in the switchgear and electronic manufacture:
- Lead (Pb)
- Hexavalent chromium (Cr +6)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Polybromobiphenyles (PBB)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Polybromodiphenylethers (PBDE)
It is closely dependent with WEEE directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment). This directive encourages and fixes specific criteria applicable to the collection, with the handling and the electric and electronic waste recycling:
- Fix conditions related to the quantity of DEEE collections (separated from waste coming from the households)
- Oblige the distributors to ensure free DEEE resumptions.
- Require the treatment of the DEEE
- Require that the producers mark the products EEE of symbol DEEE (barred Dustbin of a cross “X”).
